Curatorial Statement

How would you illustrate the journey of social progress in America? Does it follow a linear line, ascending upward from left to right? Or does it teeter beneath the weight of opposing forces?

The mainstream narrative of American history often relies upon simplified timelines that frame society as moving cleanly from oppression to liberation. In practice, power often oscillates.

American Seesaw peers into the past for a preview of our future.

American Seesaw is a collection of digital collages depicting pivotal moments in US history, including the Voting Rights Act, the American Revolution, the repeal of Roe v. Wade, and more. As the nation reflects on 250 years, this project challenges each viewer to consider whether our history is as distant as it appears.
